The Great Hall - The Great Hall is the hub of campus where the members of
the community gather each morning for morning meeting and throughout
the year for special events. On weekends it is a common spot for Big
Screen Movie Night or Twister Tournaments and during the day and free
periods, students use the space for quiet studying or playing music one
of our pianos.
Linda Clark McGoldrick '55 Library - The
library is open daily for study and research, with more than 7,000
volumes, periodicals, local and national newspapers, magazines, CDs,
videos, online catalog, and numerous databases. The Inter-Library Loan
(ILL) program loans books and resources for specific research from the
libraries at Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire.
Students are encouraged to use the library during the academic day and
during evening study hall.
Fred Steele Science Center - Opened
in October of 2006, the Fred Steele Science Center was built using
environmentally friendly technology, including an integrated solar
electric system - the first of its kind in the State of New Hampshire.
- The
Center enhances science instruction, with four state-of-the-art,
fully-equipped classroom laboratories which facilitate expanded
experimental capability and emphasize original scientific work and
personal discovery.
- The Center preserves and
perpetuates the memory of Fred Steele (1946-1980) devoted White
Mountain School science teacher, conservationist, and botanist.
Affectionately known as 'Mr. Chips', Steele instilled in his students a
love of science and a concern for preserving our natural world.
Computer Labs
- WMS
offers teachers and students three major computer labs on campus. The
Academic Wing and Linda McGoldrick '55 Library are equipped with
several computer work stations. The Multimedia Center is fully equipped
with the latest computers and software for web-based and peer editing
projects. Digital photography students may also avail themselves to
software and a high-resolution, large-format photo printer. Students
with personal laptop computers can access the network through a secure
campus-wide WiFi connection.
Student Lounge - White
Mountain provides some great spots for hanging out with friends. The
Student Lounge is often full of students (and faculty) playing
foosball, ping pong, or darts; shooting a game of pool; or kicking
back, watching DirecTV.
Dining Room
- Located
next to the Great Hall, the Dining Room is where daily meals and
Community Dinners bring the community together. Food may be harvested
from the campus garden and a creative and talented kitchen staff
prepares healthy meals. Students are actively involved in the dining
services from kitchen chores to menu choice.
Black Box Theater -
The White Mountain School Black Box theater is a center of creativity
for students. From the wall painted with the names of past WMS theatre
students, to the eclectic collection of costumes and props, this
theatre is very unique.
Visual and Performing Arts Studios
- WMS has a painting and drawing studio, ceramics studio, photo lab, and digital arts lab.
- Painting
and Drawing Studio where charcoal and oil, acryllic, or watercolor
paints continuously allow color and creativity to fill the room
- Ceramics Studio with seven potter's wheels, a hand building area, glaze room and electric kiln
- Photo Laboratory and Dark Room for black and white film development
- Digital Arts Studio outfitted with a large format photo printer, digital photo software, as well as a video editing computer
- Music, Practice, and Recording Studios for classes and music lessons
Climbing and Athletic Center
- WMS's
athletic facility includes free weights, Nautilus equipment, and a
running track and is a central point for all athletic and Outdoor
Education Program activities. WMS's indoor climbing facility covers
3,000 sq. ft., peaks at a height of 38 feet, and includes over 500 sq.
ft. of steep terrain for bouldering, ropes set with mechanical belay
devices, bolts for lead climbing, intricate corner systems and real
crack systems. Its surface, an epoxy-based cement, uses granite, marble
dust, and sand giving it the look and texture of real granite rock.
Dormitories - Burroughs,
Carter, Hill House, and Solar Dorms are designed in a traditional
clapboard and fieldstone style, and each dorm is equipped with a
student lounge. Boarding students live in small dorm communities along
with faculty and their families.
