Community Service

Active community service helps channel your best instincts, communicate your best thoughts, and make a difference in our local and world community. At WMS, we believe that Community Service is recognition of connection and interdependence. Being in a community serves us. Serving the community establishes our value to something bigger.

Local Service
Students assist numerous organizations, including the hospital, day care centers and local elementary schools, and cooking meals for The Dinner Bell (a local soup kitchen). In May, our entire school participates in a community service marathon — a day long event through which we provide nearly 1,000 hours more of community service to the surrounding communities. Faculty, staff, and students go into the greater community and work for others maintaining trails, stocking streams, painting walls, raking campsites, and cleaning litter.

Domestic and International Service
I like community service; when I do it I know I'm doing something good.Traveling domestically and internationally for community service affords students what are often life-changing ways to better understand themselves, community and the Earth we share with others. Most recently, students and teachers have traveled to Peru, where they helped build a fish farm high in the Andes, and to Nicaragua, where they helped with construction projects in one of the poorest sections of Managua. Each year, a school group travels to such places as Jonestown, Mississippi and Baltimore, Maryland to work on Habitat for Humanity projects. The world is never the same to those who participate!

Students learn by independent and collective action that they can do something that makes a difference.
