We experience the outdoors in three significant ways:
- Outdoor Learning Expeditions (OLEs)
- Outside the classroom, White Mountain students participate in three
(3) OLEs each year. By coordinating wilderness skills instruction and
a relevent academic component, students can actively experience the world
around them.
- Recent trips have included: Fly Fishing & Fresh Water Ecology, Mahoosuc
Search and Rescue, Literature & the Land, Maine
Costal Kayaking, and
The Art of Winter.
- Weekend Trips
- Rock and ice climbing, hiking, whitewater and flatwater paddling, and
backcountry skiing adventures are available for beginners to experts
during weekends throughout the school year.
- Wilderness Skill (WILSKI) Sports:
- Fall: Hiking & Fitness, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Farm & Forest
Crew
- Winter: Backcountry Skiing
- Spring: Hiking & Fitness, Rock Climbing, Whitewater
Paddling, Farm & Forest Crew
As envisioned by the headmistress who moved our school
from Concord to Bethlehem, we are "surrounded by things greater than ourselves" — specifically,
the rivers, summits, streams, waterfalls, and spectacular views of the White
Mountains. The outdoors is a unique extension of the classroom experience. The
600,000-acre White Mountain National Forest, right outside our doors, provides
endless opportunities for experiential learning and adventure. Our robust curriculum
encourages students to share the knowledge they gain with others, thereby promoting
the
idea that teaching and learning are an interactive process. The focus is on experiential
learning and a learner-centered approach, while offering quality instruction
emphasizing safety.
