Arts

As one of the top boarding schools in New England, The visual and performing arts are an integral part of student life at The White Mountain School.  In addition to our extensive course offerings, all students are encouraged to use open studio time in the afternoons and evenings, practice in the student music room, participate in our afternoon theater productions, dance in the afternoons or evenings, and attend both on and off campus art experiences. Learn how a strong boarding school visual and performing arts department can help you focus your interests and grow your passions in the arts. Our incomparable setting in the White Mountains in New Hampshire has long attracted artists, musicians, actors, and filmmakers. There is a thriving community of artists of all kinds on campus and in the surrounding New England communities just minutes from campus.

Teaching and learning are united in an interactive process at The White Mountain School that creates high standards of critical awareness within each individual. By establishing a foundation for critical thinking, concepts and basic skills based upon traditional and contemporary approaches to teaching in a studio atmosphere, WMS demonstrates that art and creativity contribute to individual growth while nurturing an aesthetic awareness within the School and society. The visual and performing arts allow us to move beyond verbal language since many of our senses and abilities are involved in producing and experiencing works of art. The development of a visual vocabulary provides a balance within our verbally and textually-oriented society.

The Catherine Houghton Arts Center

White Mountain School students and teachers are proud to work in one of the most beautiful art facilities you will find. The Catherine Houghton Arts Center opened in January of 2014. The center includes two dance studios, a visual arts studio, a music classroom and recording studio, practice rooms, and an outdoor amphitheater. In keeping with The White Mountain School's longstanding commitment to sustainability, the building was designed to achieve net zero energy use. In fact, it produces more energy than it uses.
