Global Online Academy

Global Online Academy’s Mission: GOA’s mission is to reimagine learning to empower students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society.

In the fall of 2018, The White Mountain School was proudly accepted to become a member of Global Online Academy (GOA), a consortium of leading independent schools from around the world. GOA provides students the opportunity to think and learn with students from some of the best independent schools from around the world.

Why did we join? For two reasons:

First, we want to provide our students with the opportunity to engage in a different type of educational experience. Taught by premier teachers from member schools, The White Mountain School students who choose this option will be in classes with students from around the world. They will learn to navigate cultural differences, work across time zones, and collaborate both asynchronously and virtually in group projects. These are critical skills for a 21st century leader.

Second, we recognize that one of our strengths in being a small school -- where each student is known, seen and cared for -- does impact our ability to offer the same diversity of courses that a larger school might. Given our believe in Student-Driven Inquiry and student agency, we want to be able to offer students learning opportunities that truly inspire them. GOA allows us to do this. It allows us to be both unapologetically small and ambitiously global at the same time. Our partnership with GOA allows us to maintain our commitment to community and to being a small school, while offering our students an additional set of robust courses that offer breadth and depth.

GOA courses include:
  • Bioethics
  • Climate Change and Global Inequality
  • CSII: Analyzing Data with Python
  • Gender Studies
  • Entrepreneurship in a Global Context
  • Neuropsychology
  • Linear Algebra
  • … and many more!
A select group of White Mountain students will pilot taking GOA courses in the spring of 2019, and we will open the option to all students in the 2019-2020 school year. Taking a GOA course replaces one of the five (or six) in-person courses that White Mountain students take each semester.
