My primary roles at White Mountain:
Director of SAP, Whitewater Kayaking Instructor, Backcountry Skiing Instructor
Why White Mountain?
I love WMS! I wouldn't still be here if I didn't. I love that students can shed the facade and be themselves, that it is a safe and healthy place for kids to get a transformative education. I love the integration of our outdoor education program and the exposure that ALL of our students get into this realm of educational experience. I love our community's diversity, and our focus on inclusion.
When not in the classroom I can be found:
When not working, I like being outside doing any number of things; backcountry skiing, kayaking, mountain biking, walking the dog, etc. I am also involved in a couple of non-profits, The Batey Foundation that does development work in the Dominican Republic, and Bethlehem Trails Association, which is committed to building trails for human-powered recreation in the town of Bethlehem, NH.
Favorite place on campus?
There is a beautiful and spacious hardwood forest on the backside of Hood's Hill whose floor is covered in blue flowers in the late spring. Catch this during a sunset bike ride and it is breathtaking.
I love the spring at WMS! You can hit classic New England backcountry ski lines in the morning and paddle classic New England creeks in the afternoon as the snowmelt swells the rivers. I also just love the celebration of the whitewater season and the excitement that it brings to our student body.
Favorite tradition at WMS?
Too many to list! Community Weekend, dodgeball tournament, capture the flag, inspirational and thought-provoking morning readings, beach day (Canoe Race!), quiz bowl, MLK Day, etc. WMS is simply a fun place to get a high school education.
