Is the classroom the only place in which to learn? We don’t think so. Field Courses at The White Mountain School demonstrate our commitment to learning outside the classroom. Students at White Mountain immerse themselves in a week-long, off-campus Field Course each semester. These unique experiences allow in-depth, academic exploration of a specific topic in an authentic setting. Each Field Course provides an incomparable opportunity for students to explore and develop interests and passions beyond the walls of the traditional classroom.
This fall, students embarked on immersive Field Course experiences all over the nation from the coast of Maine to the High Sierras of California. Prior to heading into the field, students met for Field Course classes twice during the school day in September to prepare for their experiences. This fall, Field Courses departed on Monday, October 1 and returned on Friday, October 5.
“From learning about the basic physics of climbing to traveling to Iceland and studying volcanoes, every Field Course I have attended has been a fantastic way to experience learning first hand. Most recently I traveled to Maine on the ‘Hydropower: The Costs and Benefits of Damming Free Flowing Rivers’ Field Course. After speaking with representatives of a local dam in New Hampshire as well as a major dam in Maine, we had the chance to whitewater raft and kayak on one of the most beautiful stretches of river that I have ever been on.” – Max Lauster ’18
